Things have been super busy around the Urbnpop camp, Lots of shows in the works..

I'm going to be in the Day of the Dead Show at youngblood, and you will not even recognize what I have come up with.. I'm super stoked on this one, its like nothing I have ever done, hell, there are no Monsters or little buddys at all on it.. But do not fret, its not a super regular thing I intend to do.. hahahah.. Then November is going to be craftastic with Urbnpop visiting Chattanooga for the first time at Chatty Crafty and then Athens Craft fest and then I'm returning to Ice in Atlanta.. So as they come up, I'll post some new news...

So it hit me today, that I’ve damn near painted over 1000 monsters these last 3 years… To celebrate I’m going to give a few away for free!! Starting this weekend through Labor day weekend, when you spend $80 or more at my booth, you have a $ 20 credit toward any Monster painting. It can be used then or with in the next 3 months… So Make it a point to stop by my booth at the Atlanta Roller Girls Bout Aug 28th or Dragon Con and pick your self up some new art….

"Sky Walk with me" art opening afterthought!

You know that calm period before a storm? Well that calm period must of happened about 5 hours before we got to the "Sky Walk with Me" Art opening at the Highlander, because at 8 pm when the event started it was a mad house in the Highlander. I knew that Star Wars would bring a crowd, but this was more than a crowd of art goers, it was a room of rabid nerddom, Drink, sharing favorite Star Wars Quotes and exchanging money for art. There was such an awesome energy in the room, drinks kept coming, art kept selling and laughs were had all around, the way I think art shows should be, a party not a golf match ( um.. where everyone is quite as a mouse). This batch of art the curators Jean Baugon and Ryan Shuckhart gathered up was the best so far of there three shows that have hosted at the Highlander. There were so many pieces that needed to go home with me, but at lass I'm waiting till Aug for the big Star Wars Convention in Orlando, so I'm hanging on to my penny's tightly. I couldn't talk so highly of this show and not mention that there were so many great pieces for sale ( hint hint and still are..) but some of my favorites were Keith Rein's , Miss Beckki, Dave Stryer's, Jared Oldham's, Craig Henderson's and Mike Groves. There was also a set of portraits of a Biker Scout, Luke in X-wing gear and a Tie-Pilot done by this guy that I just can not remember his name, but if you get a chance to see them, you will know what I'm talking about ( Just Awesome). Besides all the great art, some of the 501st came out in costume to help make the night special ( something is really special when you can share a drink with Jango Fett ( Photo to come soon). So as you can tell, I had a blast at this show and hope that you get a chance to go see the art, It hangs till Aug 1st and as the art sells, new are will be hung, so keep going back for more.

ATL art, thoughtfully wacked-out

An artist's vision can take on bizarre forms: there was the controversial feces-dotted Virgin Mary collage in NY a few years ago, which was nothing compared to the painting with the farmer standing outside his house. Y'know, with that wife of his? And the pitchfork?!? Man, that was messed up. Unafraid to push the creative envelope, Urbn Pop.

The nom d' art of a dude who dropped out of AIA in protest when it dropped illustration for Photoshop classes, Pop turns out kooky, cartoon-styled work using recycled or reclaimed materials, which he oddly claims are entirely motivated by his feelings towards "America's most-collected living artist", QVC regular Thomas Kinkade, whom he "respects as a businessman", but also hates, probably because he sucks. The twisted fun starts with horror-inspired wood block paintings like "Hellraiser" (w/ cartoony, 3D-needled Pinhead) and "Nightmare on Elm Street" w/ a bug-eyed Freddy, handmade toys like robots made of automotive parts, and the highlights: stuffed animal heads like a Care Bear and Winnie The Pooh mounted on wooden plaques -- see what happens when you grow up, Christopher Robin? See what happens?? He also remixes existing paintings and photos by adding comic-style illustrations, as with "Batman" (drawn hanging upside down over a B&W aerial photo of warehouses), and various vintage record covers, including a green triple-eyed goon drawn over the Care Bears movie soundtrack, and a 45" with a three-eyed purple shark about to gobble a showgirl called "The Follies of Paris", which you've already seen, in really bad night-vision.

UP's also peddling tees with monsters posing together around "Urbn Pop" text, plus the first issue of a comic series, featuring a rabbit named Oswald and a dead bear named Hank with arrows in his back -- controversial, yes, but not nearly as bad as that sculpture of the dude who's just sitting there thinking...quick, cover the children's eyes!!!

I've been away!

Hello y'all
So December came and went, I had full intentions of taking a vaca from art the whole month, but that did not last. About two weeks in to the month, my wife watched me twitch and become grumpy. The means one of two things, I'm hungry, or that I have not drawn anything in a while.. Both have the same results, I'm usually hard to deal with, intill we resolve the problem. So I broke my Vaca, and got back to the drawing board. Thank the maker- this oil bath feels so good- ( as quoted from C3po in Star Wars)

Flash forward to January 2010- Tons of new drawings and stuff are appearing all over the place... I'm happy.. Since I have a studio that is not our living room, my wife is happy.. Its happy times at the Hamer home..

So 2010 looks like its starting off with a bang- I did my first live painting in Orlando this last Jan at the Social, I had my first Group show at mint titled " Not you" and then entered the Pabst blue Ribbon Contest.. It looks like I will be doing a show at Radial Cafe in Atlanta and Rejoining all my comrades in the Comic industry at Megacon in Orlando in March and then my big solo show of the year in April at The Plaza theater.. So much happening... More to come on all my appearances, and the rest of the year for my art hap's.. So stay tuned and thanks for reading this blog..

I just wrapped up, a 3 month long tour for my comic and art work! What an experience it was.
Thank you to all the Conventions, Comic Stores, that had me. Thanks for all the support. Thanks to my friends and to my most favorite person ( my wife) for all the encouragement and support. I have a few more things left for 09, then it is off to double everything I did this year!

You can find me at the Woodworks Skatepark this Friday Nov 13th, doing some live art with my pals Ashley and Shane. I will also have a piece for sale at the show. A Portion of the proceeds will go to the Atlanta food Bank. Its Elephants and Mice in Cars will be playing live and there will be tones of give aways and discount skatepasses!!! Come hang out- 6-10pm.

Then Nov 21 I will be a vendor at the Indy Craft Exp. hosted by Youngblood Gallery- 10-6 pm $5 bucks. Over 100 vendors all selling handmade goods.. Give a one of a kind gift this Christmas season!

Then in Dec I'm in two gallery shows- "HORNS AND HALOS" at the Claude Gallery in New York and "SEASONS" at Youngblood Gallery ( This is my first time showing at Youngblood, so super stoked).

Comic signing tour! WAS AWESOME!!!!!

We got back from the Comic Signing tour last week and had and amazing time. For those who missed out, we spend the first day at Criminal Records in Atlanta ( Zano and Lillian and the jam) then we heading to South Carolina for Planet Comics in Anderson and Richard COmics in Greenville. Then to finish the rounds we ending on a high note at the Greenville Comic Con! Thanks to everyone who picked up a book, or a piece of art! This is gonna be just bad ass!! The Atlanta Horror fest and Zombie walk will at some point dump in the Highlander over in Midtown- ( insert joke here) but what makes it so bad ass, is my pal Ryshu is hosting his first ever art show called " Beyond the Grave". Tons of great art will adorn the walls of the highlander, while the dead, drink and party to some kick ass bands. If you get a chance, come say hi. I have a piece in this show called Chim, Chim, Fuck U! and it is an homage to Marry Poppins.. You will just have to go to see it.

I'm doing a series of Monsters and Zombies on old record jackets and this batch of found stuff is so much fun, I got some crazy stuff that I will be painting on. So it is near completion and will be heading to the printer later today! Woopie, Yeah, Word... I can not thank everybody who took part in this first issue- Ryan Shuckhart, Eric Langley, Craig Henderson, Nic Caesar, Bobby Nash, Andrew Bellury, Eric Peterson, Zano Ludgood, Wayne Cordova, and Ted Murphy. Every page looks amazing and I can not wait to have it in my grubby little hands on a physical copy. It is looking like a late August release. I will for sure have it by MEgacon and Dragoncon!
We are looking into ways to have it where you can purchase a downloadable version soon. I will have more details on that later.

This has been the most stressful week so far and it is not over yet... I'm taking the plunge and self publishing my first comic book. Even though it has been insane and I just want to scream, I'm totally excited like a kid on Christmas morning about it.. Urbnpop comics is gonna be a four issue mini series where, myself and other artist all write and draw short stories based of the monsters I have been creating in my sketchbook. I have been nursing a hurt back this week and inbetween the belly moaning, I did this Sig Haig- Capt. Spaulding Print. I originally drew it in my sketch book and finished it with color in Photoshop! This is the second on in this horror series I'm doing for my upcoming comic/Horror con- tour.

I'm doing a handful of horror shows in Sept and Oct and in honor of them I have been working on a series of legendary horror characters. Here is the first of the series- Mr Freddy Kruger. The piece started off as a drawing on Bristol board and then I scanned him in to the computer and colored and finished him in photoshop! I will have limited signed and numbered prints of this image for sale on my etsy account and in person at the cons.

Man, after a crazy month, I want to end it with two last big bangs-

June 26th- It's elephant's Cd Release show at the Earl- I making some limited edition hand painted Magnets for them and I also have a trick up my sleeve to make some hand painted show posters for this night- So come get you one!

June 28th- I will be back at the Earl for my friends Mice in Cars first headlining show at the Earl- I will be doing some live painting and selling some art- I might even have a few surprises for them too-- it would be in your best interest to come check out both shows-

So June is almost over and man, what a month it was- Three Huge events where Urbnpop took part in-
June 7th- "Monster bash"- What an amazing time- Great music, Kick ass vendors and Tons of Scary, monsterriffic people running around. The Starlight Drive and Tim were super great to us and made the event super easy to enjoy. A huge round of applause to my pal Matt ( Ewwe) for helping me set up and keep the tent together.
June 13th- The Art-b-que sponsored by Bart Webb Studios and Alcove Gallery- Another awesome weekend- Tons of great people and again the folks that run the event were so great to all of us. Many thanks to my pal Craig, for helping me with this event and too Penny and her hubby for all the great art trades and for just hanging out and keeping me sane in the heat.
Lastly and one of my favoite summer events the Atlanta Roller Girls-
June 20th- The ARG- If you have never been to a bout- the season is almost over ( aug) and you will regret not getting to see those lovely ladies in action- How can you say enough- Rad people, Hot girls on Rollerskates and art. The ARG have always been so supportive of me and Urbnpop, I love em'. Just for those who have never been out to a bout and seen our set up- July will be the last month I will be there intill next year ( I start my convention and art tour in Aug and come back in Oct). So I will be doing some new pieces as always and having a few end of the Summer sales- If your able to come check them out. Thanks to all the Girls for your support and having me out- Violet, Chopper, Reba, Edna, Thanks for everything.

So, I have been crazy busy with building a website, getting art projects caught up and just drawing for the fun of drawing. So many new things in the works, I will be at the Rock n Roll Monster bash on June 7th, the Art-b-que in Avondale estates on June 13th and then at the Atlanta roller girls bout on June 20th. Lots of chances to see some of my new works and maybe pick up a piece or two.

I'm also starting to work on a series of new horror drawings, this morning I printed off a mess of references to take with me to the beach next week to work on. I'm super excited to be doing these, for two reason, one, this is the stuff I grew up on, and two I'm gonna be doing a few horror conventions in Sept and oct. I want to have something for every one. Keep checking in on this blog, for a few previews...

I will be hanging out in in Coco Beach Thursday Feb 26th doing some live painting to the music of Damion Suomi, It's Elephant's, and Mike Dunn over at the Ultra Lounge. Show starts at 8. Every one on this bill is amazing, I can not wait.
Then on Feb 27-March 1 I will be in orlando at MEGACON Comic Convention as a guest Artist. My area is Brown 11. Come on out, I have new T-shirts ( here is the new Design)

as well as some handmade toys and new wood cutouts. I will also be bringing a new batch of Maddys my plush toy that is made by my dear friend Emily .

A Moonshine Christmas- Dec 13th

So I started to make these new paintings called "SWING KIDS" and what they are is wood cut outs with parts that move- like legs, arms, ears, mouths- what ever my imagination can come up with that i can make happen. Well, I guess this is the first of what could be many posts. I figured, I'd just ramble a minute in this first post, you know get that awkward first word out- I've been busy this last month getting ready for a few art shows- In Nov, on the 8Th I will be doing two major events the first during the day at the Yarib Shriner center on Ponce De Leon in Atlanta Georgia with the Atlanta Roller girls for their SSS- SCATTERED , SMOTHERED, AND SOUTHERN EVENT- For this show, I have done 30 paintings, each is numbered in the order I finished them in. From start to finish, they should take me under 40 days. The other event is later that night and is called "A KNIFE TRADE-AN HOMAGE TO ALL THINGS SHARPENED" It's happening over at the Five Spot in Little Five Points in Atlanta. This is a group show I'm doing with 20 of my friends. Later in Nov-on the 15th, I'm taking part in a show at the East Atlanta Tattoo Gallery called "El Dia De Los Muertos". Then on the 21st I'm doing some live painting again over at the Ice House- formerly the old Echo Lounge in East Atlanta with some great bands like Burden of Vision. That show will be super rad, I have never been to the Ice House. Well like I said, I just wanted to ramble for a few, keep checking back to this blog for new art work, new art shows and all the stuff I'm up to. Thanks
